Product Description HP DV9005US PAVILION NOTEBOOK COMPUTER
Amazon.com Product Description Balance your need for productivity with great multimedia performance with the HP Pavilion dv9005us notebook PC, which features an amazingly bright, widescreen 17-inch BrightView display--perfect for multitasking between document windows and watching movies in their native aspect ratio. It offers a cool, modern look with a durable, high-gloss piano black finish and inlaid design inspired by Zen rock gardens as well as a subtle blue backlit media control panel that responds to the slightest touch. It also has an integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam, enabling easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats. You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. It also includes LightScribe technology for personalized silkscreen-quality, laser-etched CD/DVD labels created right in the drive. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included remote control, which stores conveniently in the ExpressCard slot. Easily share digital photos with the included HP Photosmart Premiere software. Optimized for mobile performance, this notebook is powered by the 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other hardware features include a 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 video/graphics card with up to 128 MB of shared video RAM, 54G Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g), a wide variety of connectivity options, multi-format memory card reader, and Windows XP Media Center edition operating system. This is a Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready. The Basics - Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs, and it's befitting of such an entertainment-centric PC. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Processor: The 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 256 KB L2 cache (for a 512 KB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM will get you going, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
- CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Graphics and Sound The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 graphics/video card with up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card and built-in Altec Lansing speakers. Connectivity and Expansion Slots This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire: - 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
- 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
- 2 headphone jacks, 1 with SPDIF digital audio capability
- 1 microphone jack
- 1 Expansion Port 3 connector
- 1 IR receiver
- 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). Preloaded System and Software The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. The HP Photosmart Premier photo and imaging software makes digital photography fast and easy by helping you organize, edit, protect, and share your digital pictures and video clips. Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus makes it easy and intuitive to back up your pictures, videos, and music onto DVD-R/+R media for safekeeping. Overheats horribly and other flaws July 15, 2008 R. Egertson The main flaw with this product is that it overheats if you try to make use of its fairly quick processor. (i.e. game playing or heavy multi-tasking) This isn't a major issue for anyone who doesn't intend to use this computer very heavily, but the frequent blue screens have become a regular occurrence and have become very annoying.. Also, as I've seen mentioned before, the webcam is of very poor quality and freezes when taking video. Finally, about 6 months into my owning this computer, the media touch strip completely stopped working. This is another problem that I have seen mentioned before. Overall, I highly recommend against this computer, you could get much better for the same price.
Owned since December 2006 February 18, 2008 Jason Fida This laptop looks great on paper and runs well for a wile but everything is uphill from there. I have owned this laptop for a while now and I have had many problems along the way. First off I had to take this laptop to a repair shop to have the motherboard replaced because all of my usb ports stopped working after about three months. It was under warrenty so it was ok. After the repair the 10 key never worked the same. Once you accidentally bump the number lock key then you have to leave it off or the poilkjmnb keys turn into the 10 key and you cant type and use 10 key anymore. Secondly the battery life is terrible even for a 17". Thirdly mine runs VERY hot. The fan in the back left corner has been so over burdened that it has worn out and makes a lot of noise. It is way too hot in my opinion than should be tolerated from a mobile processor. Finally the dvd burner combo on mine pops out randomly while you are sitting there. I have no clue why. This has a dual core processor but it doesn't take much to slow this pc to a crawl. Itunes, word, and firefox is more than it can handle. Overall this computer was not as good as my gateway laptop that it replaced which was 3 years older and equally priced when it was new. I would not recommend this PC.

cheapo, at least it behaves like one July 13, 2007 P. Zhou 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I rated it 1 star because it won't allow me to rate it lower than that. i got what i paid for. got it last Nov, less than one year. it can't power up anymore. Never see this in any other laptops I have used. Wait, this is not all. I am not the only one whose is busted. My friend followed my footstep and bought the same model around the same time. Guess what? you got it, same problem. wont power on. Mother board busted. Mine is on its way to Fremont now for repair. I am sure it's mother board problem as well. This really changed my view about HP products. THANKS A LOT! Regret that I recommended to my friends, so I am posting this message here for you to NOT fall for it.
