Amazon.com Product Description
Satisfy your multimedia and gaming needs wherever you roam with the thin, light Toshiba Satellite P105-S6197 laptop, which includes an external USB TV tuner with both NTSC (standard definition) and ATSC (HD) tuners. It also offers great DVD viewing as well as immersive gaming graphics thanks to the 17-inch TruBrite display, Harman Kardon speakers, digital audio output, and the Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 video card with 128 MB of dedicated video memory. You can easily use this laptop as an entertainment center, with Toshiba's unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button.

It's powered by Intel's 1.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. It provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance. This laptop also features a 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g), multi-format/dual-layer DVD burner, ExpressCard slot, multi-format memory card reader, and a fingerprint reader for added security.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor has a 1.66 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: You'll be able to store large libraries of digital audio, video, and photos on the 200 GB hard drive (4200 RPM)--one of the largest hard drive capacities you'll find currently in multimedia notebooks (January 2007). This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a very good start for power users, and it offers a decently fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add up to 4 GB of RAM for smooth DVD playback and 3-D gaming. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 103-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio
This laptop has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 graphics card, which delivers stunning, HD video--up to 1080i resolution--and ultra-realistic gaming effects with 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory. It offers full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 and true high dynamic-range (HDR) lighting. Nvidia's exclusive TurboCache technology allows direct rendering from the GPU to system memory by leveraging the bi-directional PCI Express bandwidth. You'll enjoy crisp sound via the built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers, and it has standard headphone and microphone jacks as well as a digital audio output.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This Toshiba Satellite has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (in addition to a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • 1 S/PDIF digital audio output (for connecting to a home theater receiver)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect to your favorite WiFi hotspot.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

1 out of 5 stars No more Toshibas   October 21, 2008
Grimmy (MD USA)
I've bought two Satellite laptops, and both have had their batteries fail within two years. One of them won't keep a charge for more than a few minutes, and sometimes powers off when you disconnect the AC power; the other sometimes just shuts down at the slightest movement. When we called the tech support, they didn't mention that the batteries were subject to recall; now I just found out, and Toshiba won't process the recall. I don't know if the problems are battery related, since it'll cost $500 to have Toshiba diagnose the problem. That's right, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS once it's out of warranty.

The screen on the newer laptop - just two years old - has gone funky, with some horizontal lines.

They both run somewhat warm, with the fan going nonstop.

As you can tell, these are my last Toshiba laptop purchases. It's great value for the first year, so enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A good, solid laptop at a good price   May 14, 2007

I recently decided to go back to school, so I ordered this laptop to help me with my studies. Since I'm looking to free up space in my house, it will also serve as a desktop replacement.
Overall, I am very happy with its performance. The screen is large and has a very bright, crisp display. Battery consumption is decent...it can probably go a couple of hours without recharge, I usually use it while it's plugged in, so it's not a huge issue. Because it's got 2 gigs of RAM, I have yet to experience any issues with it hanging and can run many applications at once without problems.
Once in a while, the touchpad does freeze up when you press the button in the upper-right that activates those 6 shortcut buttons, but if you put the computer into sleep mode by pressing the power button, it will unfreeze and you can just press the power button again to wake it up and log back in. Hope that helps!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy so much I bought 2   May 4, 2007

I purchased a P105-S6064 in August 06. Have not had any problems with it at all. I had a question on how something worked and called tech support. Support was in US and not outsourced. Great surprise. I was so happy with the computer and friendly support I purchased the P105-S6217 last week. After purchasing I called to add the extended warranty on the earlier computer. Support again answered within a couple of minutes and with no questions at all added the 3 year extended warranty on a 9 month old computer. If you are looking for a 17" laptop, this is the way to go. I don't think you will go wrong. I didn't.

1 out of 5 stars Failed component still not fixed - being told by Toshiba 1 month for repair   February 3, 2007

3 months into ownership, modem fails on our P105-S6104. We contact Toshiba - they refer us to a local firm that does their repairs for the entire South Texas region. Takes them almost two weeks to say that the part is on backorder and will take over 1 month to get it in and fix this machine. I call Toshiba 800 number, and corporate in CA, they promise to phone back trying to find part faster than 1 month. So far I'm at over 4 hours of phone time with holds. They don't phone back (big surprise)and claim that, by law, they have 30 days to do warranty repairs. I point out that, as it stands now, they will take over 30 days for this repair, and request a replacement to get us back up and running again. Not their policy, I'm told and they dispute the 30 days, because they're not counting the days at the local repair depot before I started calling them directly. They also claim that they stand behind their product. Does this sound like support? Purchase Toshiba at your peril.
