Amazon.com Product Description
Thanks to our new Portégé A605 laptop, ultraportability has now gone mainstream, with a sleek, lightweight design so you won't get weighed down, advanced wireless so you're never out of touch, long battery life, plus a price tag that will surely make you smile. It's time to move up! and move out! Amazingly light, the Toshiba Portégé A605 measures just 1.2 inches thick and weighs only 3.2 pounds, making it a great companion on business trips. It's outfitted with a fingerprint reader for added security, as well as a 1.3-megapixel Webcam integrated into the display bezel for easy video conferencing. The dual-layer DVD±RW drive also burns CDs and offers LabelFlash print functionality. It's powered by the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor--with Centrino 2 technology--which boosts speed, reduces power requirements, and saves on battery life. The 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 includes a fast 800 MHz front-side bus and 2 MB of L2 cache, providing an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved multimedia and multitasking performance. Other features include a 250 GB hard drive, 3 GB of installed RAM (5 GB maximum), Draft-N Wi-Fi networking (802.11a/b/g/n), Secure Digital card reader, and Intel GMA X4500MHD integrated graphics (with up to 1340 MB of dynamically shared video memory). Additionally, this Toshiba notebook is RoHS-compatible, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances. This PC comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista® Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media® Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics
- Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor featuring Intel Centrino 2 technology. This processor has a 1.4 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
Formerly codenamed Montevina, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology improves upon every facet of a laptop's main features, including performance and battery life via new processors and chipsets, faster draft 802.11n wireless, and new business-class manageability capabilities. The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. | Spec Check - 12.1-inch LCD screen

| | | The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and it can run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. - Hard Drive: The large 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC6400) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. It also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed. This notebook has 1 GB on the motherboard and 2 GB in a single available memory slot. It has a maximum capacity of 5 GB (with installation of an optional 4 GB RAM chip).
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD±R DL, 8x for single-layer DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer. - Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad.
 | Screen, Video & Audio The 12.1-inch LED-backlit display has a 1280 x 800-pixel native resolution (WXGA), which offers a 720p native high-definition resolution. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500MHD, which uses shared video memory (up to 1340 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays. This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two stereo speakers. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). With USB Sleep-and-Charge support, you can use your laptop to charge your favorite portable electronic devices, even when the laptop is asleep. If you use a smartphone, you can just plug it in, power up and go without having to worry that you've got enough charge. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. It comes with the following external connectors: - 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (including 1 eSATA/USB combo port)
- Analog video output: 1 VGA
- 1 ExpressCard/34 slot
- 1 headphone jack
- 1 microphone jack
- Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot (compatible with MMC cards)
- 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet networking
- 56K modem (V.90)

| Customer Reviews: A Perfect Portable Laptop April 13, 2009 P. Howey 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
First, before buying any laptop you should know what features you are looking for and what features the laptop posses. This laptop is not for gaming or heavy duty multi media. The Toshiba Protégé A605-P200 is designed to be portable and that is exactly what it does well.
For being a 12.1 it still has many great features. I would go through them, but if you actually read about this laptop then you already know. I would like to point out that it does have one speaker, but I already knew this before I purchased the laptop. This information can be found simply by researching the laptop. I use headphones if I listen to music, so, again, this laptop works out great. If you need great laptop sound (speakers) you shouldn't be looking at 12.1's anyways. The laptop is also very light and durable. I am not sure what other people do to their laptops, but the design of this laptop is structurally sound for only being a few pounds. Is the laptop indestructible? No. You should still treat it with care since it does cost a tad more then entry level laptops. I do not understand why you wouldn't.
So, the Toshiba Protégé A605-P200 is a great portable laptop with decent power (cpu, ram, hard drive), and is packed with several external connectors and features for a 12.1.
Weak material, cheap components. January 24, 2009 Rodin, CO USA (Denver, CO) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I always had TOSHIBA as one of my favorite brands for laptops. Unfortunatelly, that's no longer true.
This laptop deserves 2 stars because it's fast and light and that's it.
It was wrapped on a thin and weak plastic material. If you decide for some reason to hold the laptop with a single hand on the corner, you will hear the HD touching something.
The speaker (ONLY ONE) is terrible... I'd say there is no speaker... you cannot hear a thing out of this thing.
The keyboard is notably weak... and I am positive it will need to be replaced soon... I am already feeling something wrong on the letter T.
Today, I noticed that the frame around the screen (another weak plastic) is cracked... I have no idea how this happened... I handle my laptop with care, it didn't fall... I really cannot tell how it happened.
Toshiba just lost a customer. I won't return it because I don't want to backup and reinstall all my stuff again (which takes me 30 hours to do) but I won't consider TOSHIBA anymore for my next latpop.
Snazzy, with occasional unacceptable poor performance January 17, 2009 Eran Magen 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was excited to receive my Portege, and to play around with it. The fingerprint reader is fun, the laptop is very lightweight, the battery life is good.... but then a couple of problems hit in quick succession. After the second problem, I gave up on the laptop and sent it back to Amazon (it's traveling there right now). I'm writing this review from my new MacBook - yes, the combination of the Portege and Vista were the final push for me to go Mac.
The specific problems that got to me were:
(1) Despite being fast overall, the laptop would do some things *very* slowly. The two examples I remember happened in Microsoft Word. When I would call the Search box (Ctrl+F), it would take a long time to drag itself across the screen and become operational (about 4 seconds). During this time I was unable to do anything else - an annoying mid-work freeze. The same thing happened whenever I saved the document after a long time of not saving it. The graphic that folds the document into the little diskette icon at the bottom of the screen would be very slow (again, about 4 seconds), during which I'd be frozen.
(2) The ethernet port didn't work. Honestly, that's what doomed the laptop for me. I plugged the cable in, and the laptop just went "huh?" I then plugged the same cable into a MacBook that happened to be nearby (my girlfriend's), and the Mac went "woohoo, internet!"
That was it. I paid more than $1,000 in order to do problem-solving right out of the box? Umm, no. I called Amazon, printed out the return label, and shipped it back to Amazon.
Nice computer. A few fatal flaws. Didn't do it for me.
Stereo Speakers? Ya Right December 24, 2008 HowardM (Virginia) 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
I wanted to like this laptop, small, lightweight, pretty fast for the specs, amazing battery life, but unfortunately Toshiba doesn't know anything about their own products and Amazon just copies that information blindly. Both on Toshiba's website and amazon.com it says: "This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two stereo speakers."
This is false, this laptop has 1 mono speaker in the upper left corner and at max volume you could barely hear it. When I contacted Amazon.com all they could say was return it, well that's what I did.
Either way if your looking for a small, ultra portable laptop with a great battery life, get this (as long as you plan on using headphones and don't care about the speakers).
Oh, and 1 more thing, the amount of pre-loaded bloatware is insane, 76 process running on first start up.
